Hosting Providers

As of last summer I believe I'd used 3 hosting providers since the late '90s.  The 3rd provider began to flake out last summer and provided such poor customer service that I decided to leave and, as you should do in those cases, I left in a hurry.  I decided to use Google as my new hosting provider for a few reasons:  a) I worked there; b) they were free; c) they have lots of different hosting features; d) it was easy to get something simple setup quickly.

The "simple" part has it's advantages and disadvantages.  Disadvantages seem abundant.

So this last few weeks I've added a few more hosting providers to my stable:  one I use for hosting panorama photos, which tend to be large and sites like Picasa don't like them; I added a Pic of the Day site.  The panorama site allows me to server large images but doesn't provide scripting capabilities (in the free versions ... yes, I'm doing this with free services ... my traffic of about 1 query per hour and $0.00 per day of revenue don't really require anything more); the free site that allows scripting doesn't allow very large files.  Together they meet my needs.

So I've got
  • Google for Sites and Picasa and email and blogs
  • a dns provider
  • two traditional hosting providers
